Property Taxes Abatement
After the Niles-Maine District Library released a blog post about returning $1 million to their tax payers, an abatement was looked into by the management team and the Board. The consensus among the Board Members is $1.5 million of the Schaumburg Township Library assessment will be abated to taxpayers on the second installment of their 2019 tax bill.
Discussion included which Fund this money would be taken from. Finance Director Valenziano explained it would be a reduction of money coming in the future and not money withdrawn from current Library funds. It is a reduction of the levy the Library filed last year. The budget for the coming year will be reduced because of this abatement but the Library’s favorable general fund balance will reduce this deficit. The figure of $1.5 million was decided based on a threshold not to exceed 10% of what the original levy was. Board Members were also given a dollar amount range between $1-1.5 million and the majority of Board Members felt comfortable based on financials with the $1.5 million abatement.
Trustee Wroblewski Bosshart moved and Trustee Hyman seconded that:
The Library Board approve a tax abatement in the amount of $1.5 million to the 2019 Tax Levy Ordinance.
