It's tax season! Taxes are due Tuesday, April 15, 2025.

Federal and state forms can be found online. If you need a paper copy, call the Reference Desk at (847) 923-3322, and we can have it ready for you at our Central Library Drive-Up Window. (We also have Curbside Pickup at our Hoffman Estates and Hanover Park branches.)

If you're looking for filing help, options are available, often for free, depending on your income level. We've compiled a list of some helpful sources.

Assistance Locator

  • IRS Free Tax Prep Search (VITA/TCE Site Locator): Search by zip code and distance or call (800) 906-9887.
    • The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers assistance for incomes $67,000 or less, persons with disabilities, or limited English-speaking taxpayers.
    • Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax return preparation assistance, particularly for taxpayers 60 years and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues.
    • When using free tax help, be prepared with what you need to bring.
  • AARP Tax Assistance Locator: Search by zip code and distance or call (888) 227-7669. The site is expected to be up by mid-January.
  • Ladder Up Tax Assistance Program (TAP): For incomes up to $35,000 per year or families up to $67,000 per year. Please note that appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis; sites close once they reach capacity; TAP limits who may be eligible for this service (see website for a list of out-of-scope situations). Search by zip code for locations and hours – these are all walk-in appointments.
