Renovation Updates

In the fall of 2016, we’re looking forward to a renovation of portions of our first floor. The area currently known as the AV Theatre and parts of our lobby will be getting a fresh new look, including a new program room, new shelving for easy browsing and lots of new seating and furniture for individuals and groups looking to collaborate.

Update: December 28, 2016

Our ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony was this morning! While we still have a few minor loose ends to tie up, the renovation project is considered complete: The Commons and Workshop are open for public use on a daily basis. Come and browse our DVD, CD, audiobook and new fiction and non-fiction book collections, drop in on a program in Workshop and take advantage of the fantastic new seating areas. The east entrance (leading toward Town Square) has also been reopened.

Thank you for your patience throughout the renovation project. Thanks to excellent planning by our architects, project manager and staff, and a very efficient construction team, the renovation project remained on schedule and on budget, and caused as little disruption to our services as possible.

Collection availability
Our staff continues to work hard repackaging and categorizing the remaining CDs so the rest of the collection will be available to you as soon as possible. We are making materials available as soon as they are ready, so you’ll notice a little more on the CD shelves each day.

Collection availability
All DVDs, audiobooks, video games and Playaways are in place on the new shelving and available for check out. A portion of our CD collection, including holiday CDs, is in the new packaging and available for check out. Our staff is working hard to repackage and categorize the remaining CDs so the rest of the collection will be available to you as soon as possible.

Upcoming items
When entering from the west entrance, you’ll notice a wall directly to your right. This is not a temporary construction wall, but the future home of a Hot Picks books display wall. We’re excited to feature these in-demand items right up front, so they are easy for you to find and browse.

Soon, the welcome desk in the middle of the lobby will be relocated. It will be adjacent to the new Hot Picks display wall so you’ll have a friendly face to greet and assist you right as you enter the Library.

We’re very pleased to announce the new program room will be called Workshop. We selected this name to complement the flexibility of the space, the variety of programs that will be held there and to inspire you to use this new room as a place to create, interact, discover and engage with your Library and with others in the community. We’ll begin hosting programs in Workshop as early as next week!

We’re also excited to announce that the overall renovated space (including the lobby, Workshop, new seating and DVD, CD and audiobook collection areas) will be called The Commons. We see these large, open areas as places for you to gather, work, relax and find new materials to enjoy. We hope all will feel welcome in The Commons and in our Library.

One final announcement: we will host a ribbon cutting of The Commons on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 10:30 a.m. Please join us for a brief ceremony and refreshments, then explore the new space and see the results of our renovation project if you haven’t already!

Our renovation project continues to be on schedule and on budget!

Collection availability
Our new DVD, CD and audiobook shelving is scheduled to be delivered early the week of Nov. 7. It will take a few days to install the shelves, then we’ll be moving our collections to their new homes.

We anticipate that all DVDs (including non-fiction DVDs), audiobooks, video games, Playaways and a portion of our CD collection will be available on the new shelving the week of Nov. 14.

All holiday CDs and a variety of CDs from other genres will be available immediately. We’re continuing to move our CD collection into its new packaging, and we’ll continue to make more items available as they are ready.

You’ll also notice that our classification system for CDs is a bit different. Our categories will now more closely reflect what you see in retail stores, making it easier for you to browse and find the music you love.

Upcoming items
Our new program room is nearing completion with the installation of the sliding glass door, media equipment, doors and trim.

The carpet installation has been adjusted to better accommodate the needs of the construction team. Rather than an overnight installation, workers will install carpeting for a few hours each morning the week of Nov. 7 before we open to the public.

The first phase of our project is nearing completion. The current construction area will be open to the public the week of Nov. 14 and will house our DVD, CD, audiobook and video game collections on the new shelving.

The opening of this area will mean the closure of the east corridor and the area where our collections are currently held. Please note that the east entrance (leading towards Town Square) will be temporarily closed for 4-6 weeks as the construction crew works in this area.

Upcoming items
In the coming week, the construction crew will be working on the wall of the Town Square entrance corridor with windows looking into The Enchanted Forest. You will still be able to utilize the Town Square entrance at all times, but there may be some workers in the corridor, removing wallpaper and painting the window frames. Workers will also be painting window frames inside The Enchanted Forest, and this area will be closed for a few hours while they are working and the paint is drying.

The first phase of our project is nearing completion. The overnight carpet installation will happen in early November. Shortly after that, a portion of the new space will be open to the public. Some work will continue in this section of the project and may cause certain areas to temporarily close – usually just for a few hours at a time.

Collection availability
Once the completed portion of the project is open, we’ll be placing movies, music, audiobooks and video games on the new shelves. It may take us a few days to get everything into place, but we are still on track to have these full collections available to you in mid-November.

Completed items
Our construction crew has been hard at work these last six weeks. Here are just of the few major items they have already completed: installation of electric and telecom wiring; installation of HVAC and fire protection systems; drywall walls, ceilings and soffits; prime and first coat of paint; and installation of the track for the glass door of the multi-purpose room. Overall, the space remains very open to accommodate new shelving and furniture that will be coming soon.

Upcoming items
Carpet installation is scheduled to occur within the next two weeks. This will be an overnight installation to ensure minimal disruption in public areas. Once the carpet is installed, the temporary construction wall will be removed and replaced with plastic, orange snow fencing. Some other upcoming items include installation of lighting, special ceiling panels in the multi-purpose room, the sliding glass door for the multi-purpose room and audio/video equipment.

Have you stopped by the Central Library this week? Construction is underway! Our project is currently on schedule and on budget and we’re planning for that to continue as the renovation progresses these next few months.

Temporary walls are in place and demolition is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 12. We’ve requested that most of the tear down happen from 6-9 a.m. to minimize the impact on patrons using the Library. The noisiest part of this project will last just three days and will happen before we open our doors each morning, but you may still hear some noise, such as hammering and nail guns, throughout the day as the project progresses.

The temporary walls will help contain some noise and most of the mess, but please do pardon our dust throughout construction. The conscientious work crew will do their best to keep all areas of our Library clean, but you may notice some dust in public areas near the construction zone.

Update: August 30, 2016
Collection availability
We’re making final preparations for the temporary CD, DVD and audiobook collections that will be available during our renovation. We want to make you aware of some of the changes in availability to the items in these collections.

As part of this process, all CDs (with the exception of new CDs) will be moved to a staff work space where they will be repackaged so they are ready to be displayed on our new shelves in mid-November. If you search for any of these temporarily unavailable CDs in our catalog, you’ll see if we have them available at one of our branches. If you’d like to check out any of these items before mid-November, our staff can see if these items are available at a nearby library and can assist in coordinating an inter-library loan.

We will also be moving non-fiction DVDs to staff storage in our basement. We are temporarily relocating these items because they have a lower demand than others in our collection. While you won’t be able to browse this collection, the items will still be available for you to check out. When you search for any of these items in our catalog, you’ll see the location noted as “AV Basement.” You can place a hold on the item and we’ll notify you when it’s available. Or, if you’re in the Library and are willing to wait for a few minutes, you can ask a staff member to retrieve the item for you so you can check it out right away.

Thank you for your patience with us as we temporarily adjust the availability of these items. Please don’t hesitate to ask a staff member if you are unsure of which items are available or where to find items.

Movie screenings
Due to the renovation project, our movie screenings at the Central Library are on hold. Our branches continue to screen movies on a regular basis – click here for the Hoffman Estates Branch events calendar and click here for the Hanover Park Branch events calendar.

Update: August 24, 2016
Floor Plan
We have a new, more accurate floor plan depicting how the area will look after the renovation. Click here to view a larger version of this drawing.

In this new plan, you can see that we’ll be adding more than 140 new seats and installing new, more efficient shelving to house our collections.

What you don’t see on this floor plan is that, due to the efficient shelving and material packaging, we will still maintain one of the largest public library collections of movies, music, games and audiobooks in the Chicagoland area. For example, this new system allows us to display 30 CDs in the same amount of space where we can currently display 6 CDs.

Schedule, Collection Availability and Temporary Closures
We expect preparation for demolition to begin as early as Thursday, Sept. 1, with demolition beginning on schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Once demolition has begun, temporary walls and vinyl draping will enclose the work zone. Not only will this help contain the dust and the noise, but will help ensure patron and staff safety throughout the project.

Beginning Sept. 6, a portion of the collection will be unavailable to patrons due to the space available to display materials during the renovation. We are currently developing a plan to ensure that the most in-demand materials are available during this time. We anticipate the full collection will once again be available beginning Nov. 16, when we are able to relocate the full collection to its new shelves.

We also anticipate a temporary closure of the east entrance beginning Nov. 16 and lasting through the end of the project (approximately Dec. 16). Signage will be in place to let you know when this closure occurs and to direct you to the west entrance.

Décor for Sale
You may be familiar with the musical instruments and photos currently hanging throughout our AV Theatre. While we will retain and repurpose some of these pieces (such as the mountain dulcimer), the majority will be available for sale at our upcoming book sales. The hand-painted movie posters will not be available for sale until an appropriate value can be assigned to these unique items.

The book sale is located in the Central Library basement (accessible via the south entrance) on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Any items not sold at this time will be available at the Nov. 12 sale.

Why renovate this space? It’s part of an architectural master plan for our building that looks to accommodate the changing ways the public uses the Library and our spaces. For this project, we’re looking to create a comfortable, inviting space where patrons can relax and enjoy the company of others, settle in and get some work done, or browse new materials to see what’s popular right now.

We anticipate work on the project will begin right after Labor Day, and will last approximately 2.5-3 months.
